This chronicle details the exploits and adventures of beings known simply as immortals. Immortals cannot die, except by one means - and that is to remove their head. Doing so releases a furious energy, called the Quickening. It is the lifeforce of an immortal, and such a being who gains this energy from his defeated foe grows even stronger. Immortals have dueled each other since the beginning of man's existence, awaiting the time of the Gathering in which only one of their number will emerge as the last immortal. This hunting of heads is called the Game, and every immortal, though he is spared the ravages of time, is now prey to his own kind. Even if such a being chooses so not play this Game, such must still be wary of those that do. There is only one refuge, and that is Holy Ground. For all but a single victor, the ranks of immortals will eventually thin - for "there can be, only one."

In April of the Year 1185, the Samurai Taira Tsunashige died defending the child Emperor Antoku at the Battle of Dan-no-Ura, the last of the great battles of the Gempei War. After his body was dumped overboard from his burning ship, Tsunashige recovered underwater and, claiming the sword from a crab infested noble's corpse, he returned to the world above, strangely alive. The immortal Tsunashige, albeit under different names, travelled across Asia, battling until he was one of the greatest warriours who ever lived. Only other immortals could challenge him and even they fell before him, adding their quickening to his. After World War I, Watcher sources lost track of Tsunashige, until recently. It is believed that the ancient Samurai came to the United States to reclaim his sword, taken as booty by a G.I, who had removed it from a temple in Japan during the occupation. In 1953, the ex G.I. was found murdered, his body almost cut in two and his house riddled with gunfire. A recent clue has lead certain individuals to believe Tsunashige is in Santa Cruz. Word of this has gone out to the world at large, and immortals have flocked to the area - some hoping to take the samurai's head, others perhaps to learn from the ancient warrior. Which then are you?
