Prelude

"Howard," Geoff said as he answered the phone.
"Geoff, it's Alex. Can you stop by the resturant? I need a favor."
"Sure, how's about I stop by later tonight?"
"See you then." The phone clicked dead.
Then again her additude towards him had been dead since she met that new guy Jim, Tim, Kim or something like that. Besides Alex and I never really hit it off. She didn't like the fact that he wouldn't talk about the work he did for the Firm. Not like he could with all the security around the office. He was just waiting for the memo announcing that monitoring devices were being installed in the restrooms.

"How many?" the Hostess asked as Geoff walked in the door.
"Hmm. Alex asked me to stop by. Is she here?"
"She's in the back, let me get her for you."
"That's alright. She's expecting me."
"Oh, you're the reason she's upset tonight," she said glaring at him.
"Well if I come back with her handprint on my face, then I must have been." Geoff said as he head towards the back.

"Knock. Knock. May I come in or are you going to kill me where I stand?" Geoff said standing in the doorway of the office.
"Hmpf," Alex said. "You're not what I'm upset about. Close the door and have a seat."
"That's good to know," Tim said as he shut the door. "I think," he added as he sat down. "So, like what are you upset about?"
"Timothy's missing. He hasn't returned any of my calls, pages or emails."
"Why don't you just drive over to his place?"
"I can't. He's been in California for the past two months."
"That would be a long drive. What part of the state is he in?"
"Santa Cruz area."
"Well I guess I could check the computer and see if any John Doe's have turned up matching his description. When was the last time you talked with him?"
"Sometime in early July. After the fourth. He sent an email telling me what's been happening out there."
"Do you still have it? It would help me in knowing how far back to seach."
"I think I deleted it but I'll check."
"Good, I'll start looking in the morning."
"Thanks."

"You wanted to see me Sir?" Howard asked as he entered Edwards's office.
"Have a seat," the man behind the desk replied, then continued after Howard sat.
"What is your interest in the Santa Cruz Hacker?"
"Excuse me?" Howard shifted in the chair. He wondered how Mr. Edwards knew so quickly; he had only started the search less then an hour ago.
"Why are you looking into those murders?"
"I wasn't, Sir. A friend asked my to see if a missing friend of theirs had turned up dead. He did; his headless corpse washed up on shore the other day. The police ID'd the body from his finger prints yesterday. The M.E.'s report noted that several other headless bodies have be turning up since the begining of the year. I remembered seeing something about similar murders occuring last year in Europe and here on the East Coast. I was curious and things have been slow in my section. Who's toes did I step on?"
"Mine," Edwards said glaring at him.
Ooops, Howard thought, "Should I clean out my desk and turn in my resignation?"
"Have your desk packed up by 1500."
"Yes Sir," Howard rose from the chair and pulled off his ID badge. "Do you want this now or should I leave it at the guard station on my way out?"
"You will need it when you pick up your tickets."
"Tickets? Tickets to where?"
"San Francisco. You are booked on a flight out of Dulles at 2100 tonight.
Pick up your orders out front at 1500."
"How long will I be out there?"
"Until I tell you to return."
"Yes Sir."

It was late when time finally pulled into the Comfort Inn in Santa Cruz. He had spent most of the flight out reading the e-mails that Alex had given him. He still hadn't open the packet the man who met him at the airport had given him. He had also handed him the keys to the Suburban he was now driving. Edwards must think he was going to get into a lot of trouble out here since he assigned him a "War Wagon" he thought. He didn't want to really open the packet but knew that would contain his cover story and his true reason for being out him.
